Akhisar ( German : White Castle or Bright Castle ) is the county seat of the eponymous district in the province of Manisa in the Aegean region of Turkey . The city is located at an altitude of 94 m. The district is located in the northwest of the province and borders on the province of Izmir to the west and the province of Balıkesir to the north . Since a regional reform in 2014, the city is identical in area and population to the district.
The district with an area of 1,754 km² has 171,381 inhabitants (2019).
history
In ancient times the place was called Thyatira , some ruins can still be seen near the center of the city. Akhisar was conquered by the Ottomans in 1382 , but was lost again under Timur during the Mongol invasion . In 1425/6 it could be recaptured by Chalil Yakschi Beg and belonged to the Vilayet of Aydın until 1921 , then to that of Manisa. In 1914 the city had 12,000 inhabitants, three quarters of whom were Muslim. In 1935 the population was 21,000.
Sports
The local football club Akhisar Belediyespor , founded in 1970, has played mainly in the third and fourth leagues since the 1980s , before moving up to the second highest division, the TFF 1st Lig , in 2010. In his second second division season, the 2011/12 season , Akhisar Belediyespor was champion of the TFF 1. Lig and rose to the Süper Lig for the first time . This first division participation of the club also meant that the popularity of the place increased. In 2018 the club won the Turkish Cup for the first time.

The city is known nationwide for its Akhisar Köfte , a special type of Turkish meatballs known as Köfte .
