Alaşehir , the old Philadelphia , is the capital of the district of the same name in the Turkish province of Manisa . Alaşehir is located near the Izmir - Ankara road .
Alaşehir is located 118 km east of Izmir at the northern foot of the Tmolos and the Kusu Çay , a tributary of the Great Meander . The city, which is still partially enclosed by the old wall, has 46,544 inhabitants.
The city did not fall into the power of the Turks until 1390 , as the last Byzantine city in Asia Minor (outside the Empire of Trebizond ), after eight years of fighting against their superiority.
Alaşehir is a station on the Izmir – Afyonkarahisar railway line .
The district is drained by the Alaşehir Çayı River. The Afşar dam is located on the southern edge of the river plain.
