The Izmir – Afyonkarahisar railway in Turkey connects Izmir with the Anatolian hinterland and connects to the Anatolian Railway in Afyonkarahisar .

history

The construction of the railway line was initially started by The Smyrna Cassaba Railway (SCR) as their main line in 1863, later due to the economic difficulties of the company partly by the Ottoman Empire and partly jointly by the company and the Ottoman Empire. It was put into operation in the following sections:

section km opening by
Izmir Basmane - Manisa 66 km October 10, 1865 SCR
Mansia - Turgutlu 27 km January 10, 1866 SCR
Turgutlu - Alaşehir 76 km March 1, 1875 Ottoman Empire
Alaşehir– Usak 118 km December 20, 1887 Ottoman Empire / SCR
Uşak– Afyonkarahisar 133 km 1890 Ottoman Empire / SCR

In 1893, the Société Ottomane du Chemin de fer de Smyrne-Cassaba et Prolongements (SCP) took over the infrastructure and operation of the line. On May 6, 1899, the SCP concluded an agreement with the CFOA that included transitional operations between the two railways in Afyonkarahisar, continuous tariffing and mutual representation in the bodies of the two companies.

When the Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Devlet Demiryolları (TCDD) took over the SCP as part of the nationalization policy of the Turkish Republic on June 1, 1934, the Izmir – Afyonkarahisar line also became part of the Turkish State Railways .

business

The 252-kilometer route has steep gradients due to the mountainous terrain. It crosses the watershed between the Aegean and the Black Sea at 1263 meters above sea level . The track had only a relatively light superstructure . An axle load of 13.5 tons was not allowed to be exceeded in 1934.

The main goods in transit were agricultural products and raw materials that were exported through the port of Izmir. In the area of the city of Izmir and its surrounding area, suburban traffic was offered, but outside of this area a maximum of one or two pairs of trains ran per day.

Today, the Konya Mavi operates on the route as a modern night express train .
