The Afşar dam ( Afşar Barajı in Turkish ) is located on the Alaşehir Çayı , a left tributary of the Gediz , 13 km southeast of the city of Alaşehir in the western Turkish province of Manisa .
The dam was built in 1973–1977 for irrigation and flood protection . The earthfill dam has a height of 43.5 m above the valley floor and has a volume of 3.5 million m³. The associated reservoir covers an area of 5.7 km² with normal back-up and has a storage space of 72 million m³. The dam is used to irrigate an area of 13,500 ha.
