Soma is a town in the district of the same name ( Ilçe ) in the Turkish province of Manisa , about 85 km north of Manisa and about 45 km east of Bergama (the former Pergamon ).

Soma is located on the banks of the Bakırçay River . It has 73,027 inhabitants (2008). There are large deposits of lignite around the city , which are mined underground , and therefore two coal-fired power plants .

In May 2014 came in the pit at the village Eynez in the district of Soma to the heavy soma mine disaster . North of the city are the Sevişler dams and the Kül dams .
