society
John began his career as a football player in the US college area, where the US A-League club Carolina Dynamo noticed him, they signed him, and in the same year he moved to the New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers of the same League. For the 1998 season he switched to Major League Soccer for the Columbus Crew and immediately became the top scorer of the MLS with 26 goals, as well as the first MLS player to achieve three hat tricks in one season; in 1999 he was still able to score 18 goals. John moved to England to Nottingham Forest ; where he became the club's top scorer in 2001. He played in Nottingham for two and a half years before moving to Birmingham City during the 2002/03 winter break ; he was able to secure promotion to the Premier League for City with seven goals . In the following season he only got five goals in just 20 missions and had more and more difficulties to be set up. He therefore moved to Coventry City in the Football League Championship for the 2004/05 season , where he was able to secure a regular place, for the first half of the 2005/06 season he was loaned to Derby County and played again for Coventry from the end of December 2005. In January 2007 he moved to Sunderland FC from where he was transferred to Southampton FC in the 2nd English league in exchange for Kenwyne Jones in August 2007 . He signed with Crystal Palace in late July 2009 and was loaned to Ipswich Town for two months during the 2009-10 season .
National team
In his very first game in 1995 for the national team of Trinidad and Tobago against Finland , he scored a goal at the age of 19 and scored 69 goals in 109 national team appearances. With 69 goals, he is not only the record scorer in his home team, he is one of the top 10 most successful goal scorers in A international matches of all time and the top 3 of the national players active at the time.
In April 2006 he was appointed to his country's selection for the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
In September and October 2011, after a break of more than two years, he returned to international appearances and was used in the World Cup qualifiers against Bermuda and Barbados .
