Avery John (born June 18, 1975 in Point Fortin ) is a retired soccer player from Trinidad and Tobago . The defender was most recently under contract with DC United in the US Major League Soccer . John was mostly used as a central defender, but could also play in the outer positions of the defense; he was known in the MLS for his speed and sprint strength. He is the cousin of his national team-mate star John .
Career
youth
John began his career as a soccer player in US college areas. First he played for Yavapai College in Arizona , then for the American University in Washington, DC He also played on various national and regional college selection teams.
professional
After graduating from college in 1999, he first played for two clubs in the A-League , the second highest US division after the MLS. First with the Boston Bulldogs and then with the New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers .
In autumn 2000 he moved to the League of Ireland and played there one after the other for Shelbourne FC , Longford Town and the Bohemians , during this time he was in several contract negotiations with French and English professional clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Colchester United , but these failed his status as a non-UEFA foreigner. After a brief interlude in South Africa with the Orlando Pirates , he was on the verge of signing a contract with either Wycombe Wanderers or Birmingham City in England in 2004 , but was denied his work permit, so he moved to the MLS for New England Revolution .
He has spent most of his career with the Revs. He was part of the team's regular squad. Despite injuries and international matches, he played almost all of the games.
On May 1, 2008, he moved to Miami FC . He stayed there for barely a year before moving to DC United in late April. He ended his career in early 2010.
National team
He has played for the national team of Trinidad and Tobago since qualifying for the 1998 World Cup . In April 2006 he was appointed to his country's selection for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . In the first group game of Trinidad and Tobago against Sweden, John got the first yellow-red card of the 2006 World Cup after two tough fouls against Christian Wilhelmsson from Sweden . Nevertheless, after the World Cup he was awarded the Chaconia Medal of his home country.
