As a player, Sancho was primarily a central defender, but could also be used as a right defender. He has been Minister of Sport of Trinidad and Tobago since February 2015.
Club career
Brent Sancho was born on March 13, 1977 in the now defunct Stanley's Maternity Clinic in the Maraval suburb of Port of Spain to Pearl Sancho (née Mc Nish) from Freeport and Keith Sancho from Port of Spain. Before emigrating to the United States, he graduated from the Trinity Junior Boys School and Trinity College in Maraval and the Malick Senior Comprehensive in Morvant . His first stop in the USA was the Essex Community College , which no longer exists today in this form , and which merged into the Community College of Baltimore County in 1998 together with the two other colleges in this region.
After the Bachelor of Arts in psychology at St. John's University in New York , in whose university team he had also played, Sancho led the first two stations of his career as a professional footballer in the Finnish league, first to Myllykosken Pallo -47 , where he Voted best player by fans in 1998, and then to FC Tervarit in 1999 . Before that he had also played on an amateur basis for the Brooklyn Italians when he was not playing at the end of his studies . With the men's soccer team of St. John's he won the first and so far only national championship title in the team's history in 1996 and was part of this at a private audience with the then Pope John Paul II.
In 2000 he moved to the USL A-League , the highest professional league in the United States below Major League Soccer , to Charleston Battery and in 2001 in the same league to the Portland Timbers . After a move to the MLS had failed, he went to the Trinidadian league in 2002 to San Juan Jabloteh . With this club he won the championship in 2002. He spent the 2002/03 season at Joe Public FC in Trinidad.
In the summer break of 2003 he went back to Europe for FC Dundee in the Scottish Premier League . In the next two years he completed 48 competitive appearances for Dundee, finally moving to Gillingham FC in the summer of 2005 . There he played with his national teammate Ian Cox .
In December 2007, Sancho signed a one-month contract with Millwall FC . This was not renewed and he was hired in March 2008 at the Scottish club Ross County . At the end of the season, his contract was not renewed and he played at Wrexham FC on a trial basis. Nor did he get a contract. In August 2008, Sancho returned to the USA. In the second half of the 2008 season he was on the field for the Atlanta Silverbacks .
From February 26, 2009 he played for the Rochester Rhinos , with whom he signed a two-year contract. After only one game year, in which he had scored a goal in 24 league appearances, he moved home to North East Stars FC , whose owner and head coach he was at that time. Subsequently, he founded his own soccer team called Central FC , which immediately took part in the TT Pro League and of which he was Chief Executive Officer from the start.
After being named sports director of Trinidad and Tobago in February 2015, he stepped down as CEO of Central FC and handed it over to co-owner Kevin Harrison. As a politician, he represents the Toco / Sangre-Grande UNC People's Partnership Party .
National team
Sancho played in all youth teams in his homeland starting with the U-14 to the U-23 Olympic team, of which he was temporarily the captain. In an A international match he made his debut in March 2000 in a qualifying game for the 2002 World Cup against the Netherlands Antilles at the age of 22. Sometimes he was a regular in the selection, but from 2005 he was mostly only a substitute. Sancho completed 43 A-internationals for the Dutch Antilles and was part of the finals of his country of birth for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . On October 9, 2006, he resigned from the national team.
