Ian Cox

Ian Gary Cox (born March 25, 1971 in Croydon , London ) is a former football player . He played as a central defender and in midfield and was considered a strong tackle and header. He was active for the national team of Trinidad and Tobago .

Club career

Cox began his career as a professional footballer when he moved from the then sixth division Carshalton Athletic to Crystal Palace in 1994 , with whom he spent a year of the then highest and one season in the second highest English league. He could not secure a place in the starting eleven at Crystal Palace and moved to the third division AFC Bournemouth in 1996 . There he was a regular player straight away and played over 160 league games. After his contract expired, he moved to the second division club Burnley FC for the 2000/01 season , in 2003 he went to Gillingham FC and in 2008 to Maidstone United , where he ended his career at the age of 38 after the 2008/09 season.

National team

Cox made his debut at the age of 28 in 2000 in a 1-0 defeat by Morocco in the national team of Trinidad and Tobago . After five more games, he resigned from the national team in the spring of 2001 to concentrate on his club career. He returned to the selection in 2004 and played six qualifying games for the 2006 World Cup . Cox was named to the final squad of Trinidad and Tobago for the 2006 World Cup. After the World Cup, Cox did not play another international match.
