The TT Pro League is the top division of the national football association of Trinidad and Tobago .
history
Amateurs
From 1908 to 1973, the Port of Spain Football League was played as the first national football league, where the defunct Maple FC won the championship 13 times. Then from 1974 to 1995 the Amateur League National League was the top division in Trinidadian football. Defense Force FC has won the title 15 times here. After failing to qualify for the 1990 and 1994 World Cups , enthusiasm for football in Trinidad had reached an all-time low. The proposal for a professional football league came from Austin “Jack” Warner , a long-time Trinidadian football official, member of the FIFA Executive Committee and CONCACAF President. First, the Semi-Professional League was introduced in 1996, which introduced the clubs involved to professional football for three years.

Professional
In 1999 the Professional Football League was founded with eight clubs, the first professional league in the Caribbean. In February 2002 the Professional Football League ceased operations for financial reasons, only to be brought back to life two months later with a new financing model and eight clubs as the TT Pro League.
