Morvant is a city in Trinidad and Tobago . It is located in the East-West Corridor in the San Juan-Laventille region . Politically it belongs to the constituency Laventille East / Morvant.
location
Morvant is located in the north of the island of Trinidad, in the middle of the East-West Corridor, the metropolitan region of the state capital Port of Spain south of the Northern Range from west to east . Since Port of Spain is bounded in the north by the Northern Range and in the south by the Caroni Swamp , the city expanded to the east over time. The resulting east-west corridor is so densely populated that in the past independent cities merge into one another and now have the character of districts of the capital agglomeration. However, they are still formally independent. To the west, Morvant is bordered by the Gonzales district of Port of Spain, to the southeast by Barataria and to the east by San Juan ; in the north rises the Northern Range, on the slopes of which Morvant extends. In the southwest the city borders on Laventille , with which it is colloquially often summarized to "Morvant / Laventille". Morvant is divided into the communities Marie Road, Mon Repos, Morvant Proper and Never Dirty.
history
Morvant was founded in the 1840s by freed slaves of African descent. In the 21st century, the city is primarily known for its high crime rate. In 2004, almost 20% of all homicides in the country occurred in Morvant / Laventille.
Economy and Transport
Morvant is located in the immediate catchment area of Port of Spain and is equipped with the infrastructure. The Eastern Main Road, one of the main arteries of Trinidad, runs in the south of Morvan. The Lady Young Road, an alternative approach road to Port of Spain, runs along the eastern border with San Juan and further along the northern border of Morvan. Small parts of Morvan are not connected to the local water and sewage network.
Massy Motors, Trinidad's largest vehicle importer with a 40% share of the country's car fleet, is based in Morvant.
Facilities
The Coconut Drive Recreation Ground is the home stadium of the Trinidadian first division soccer team Morvant Elements.
Culture
Morvant is home to the steel bands Morvant Ebonites and Caribbean Paradise. The "Sweet Morvant" festival, a four-day festival of different art movements, has been taking place in Morvant since 2014.
