Carlos Akenhaton Edwards (born October 24, 1978 in Diego Martin ) is a football player from Trinidad and Tobago . The midfielder is the current national player in his country and has been under contract in the English Football League Championship at Ipswich Town since September 2009 . He also took part in the 2006 World Cup with the national team.

Athletic career

Edwards, who can also be used as a right winger in the full-back position, began his professional career in his home country with Defense Force FC . After a successful trial session, Edwards, who had attended the same school as his future national team mate Kenwyne Jones , moved to the Welsh AFC Wrexham in the English league for £ 250,000 - other newcomers from his home country at the AFC Wrexham were Dennis Lawrence and Hector Sam at the time . With the promotion to the third class Second Division Edwards celebrated his first big success in the 2002/03 season, contributed ten goals and was voted the best player of the past season both internally and in the league-wide team of the year. The latter honor he won a year later in the third division, when he contributed five goals to the fact that the AFC Wrexham received the class with a secure midfield. In his final season for the "Red Dragons" caused a knee injury, which Edwards had sustained during a national team appearance, that he was incapacitated in the Hinserie. In the end, he relegated his club to the fourth division, but at the same time won his first English title with the Football League Trophy .

After the contract in Wrexham ended, Edwards moved to the second division Luton Town free of charge in May 2005 , where he signed a contract with a term of three years. Right from the start he became a crowd favorite at his new club due to his technical skills and speed, and recommended himself for even higher tasks. On January 2, 2007, he was hired by second division rivals AFC Sunderland , where he signed a new 3½-year contract and did well with five goals in the remaining games of the season. This included the decisive goal for 3: 2 final score against Burnley , who after the defeat of Derby County against Crystal Palace meant the next day direct promotion to the Premier League. His time in the English elite league was short-lived, however, as he injured his Achilles tendon in the second game of the season and broke a leg shortly after his comeback. Edwards only returned shortly before the end of the season, but was then after a number of new signings in the summer initially no longer "first choice" and received in October 2008 approval for a loan deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers . Already on November 20, 2008 the "Black Cats" called him back to Sunderland after only six appearances for the "Wolves", where he appeared more as a substitute player with 16 substitutions in 22 league games.

On September 1, 2009 Edwards moved together with Grant Leadbitter for a total transfer fee of four million pounds from Sunderland AFC to the second division club Ipswich Town . He played for Millwall FC from March 2014 to May 2015 and has been without a club since then.

Trinidad and Tobago national team

After Edwards had not played in any youth team in his home country, he made his debut on June 5, 1999 in the Caribbean Championship for Trinidad and Tobago against Grenada and became a regular player after winning the tournament. He was part of the team that took part in a World Cup finals for the first time in the country's history in 2006 and was consistently on the field in the group matches against Sweden , England and Paraguay .
