Diego Martin is a Trinidadian city in the northwest of the island of Trinidad , which is the capital of the administrative region of the same name .
geography
Diego Martin is located a little west of the capital Port of Spain and northeast of Carenage . It is a densely populated area in a valley in the Northern Range through which the Diego Martin River runs.
history
The city was named after the Diego Martin River, which in turn was named after the Spanish conqueror Don Diego Martin. The area was first settled in the 1780s by French plantation owners and their slaves , who displaced Indians ( Caribs or Arawak ) living there . Decisive for the occupation of the valley was his by the Diego Martin River, which made the valley one of the most fertile in the Northern Range.
Diego Martin consists of many individual localities, e.g. For example: Congo Village, Diamond Vale, Green Hill, Patna Village, Petit Valley, La Puerta, Rich Plain, River Estate and Sierra Leone.
