history

Until 1990 Trinidad was divided into counties . As part of an administrative reform (Municipal Corporations Act No. 21), all counties were dissolved in 1990 and new administrative units were created. Parts of County Saint George became Diego Martin. The region is named after the Diego Martin River, which rises in the Northern Range and drains into the Gulf of Paria. The river, in turn, was named after one of the island's early Spanish explorers.

economy

A not unimportant economic factor in Diego Martin is the marina in Chaguaramas Bay, which offers 3000 boat berths and is a popular place for sailors to sit out the hurricane season due to its location south of the hurricane belt. There are also some smaller shipyards and facilities for maritime trade in Chaguaramas Bay. On Cronstadt Island there is a plant for further processing of imported barite with a capacity of 35,000 tons per year.
