Career
Club career
Eladio Rojas, born in 1934 in the small town of Tierra Amarilla near Viña del Mar , began playing football in the latter town at the CD Everton club . For Everton, the midfielder first played in the youth and finally between 1954 and 1963 in a first period in the adult team. In doing so, he missed winning a title in the Chilean championship with the champions from 1950 and 1952.
In the middle of the 1963 championship season, Eladio Rojas left his employer and joined the Argentine noble club CA River Plate from the capital Buenos Aires . At River Plate, Rojas played for two years until 1965, but just caught a period of unsuccessfulness with the Argentine soccer record champions. For eighteen years between 1957 and 1975 they didn’t win a national title, even though they’re in the Copa Libertadores final . However, this did not fall within the duration of Eladio Rojas' commitment to River Plate. This made just nine league games for the club in two years.
In 1965 Rojas returned to his Chilean homeland and from then on played for the current record champions CSD Colo-Colo . Even with Colo-Colo, Rojas did not manage to win a championship. Nevertheless, he made 37 league games for the club in two years, in which he scored seven goals. In 1967 Eladio Rojas changed clubs again and returned to his hometown club Everton Viña del Mar, where he let his career end in a year until 1968. In 1968 Eladio Rojas ended his career as an active soccer player at the age of 34.
National team
Between 1959 and 1968 Eladio Rojas made a total of 27 appearances in the Chilean national football team . He got three goals. He was appointed to the South American squad for the 1962 World Cup in his own country by national coach Fernando Riera . Rojas was used in all five games of the Chilean team at the tournament. They qualified second in group B, behind Germany , but ahead of Italy and Switzerland for the quarter-finals, where they got the upper hand 2-1 against the Soviet Union . Eladio Rojas made it 2-1 in the 29th minute of the game, after Leonel Sánchez had scored for Chile and Igor Tschislenko for the Soviet Union. In the semifinals, the reigning world champions Brazil then waited for the hosts. This time Chile couldn't prevail, the Brazilians won 4-2 and made it into the final in Santiago de Chile . The Chileans, however, had to be content with the game for third place, where Yugoslavia was waiting. Eladio Rojas made it with his goal in the 90th minute for the late 1-0 and thus third place in the home world championship.
