Honorino Landa Vera (born June 1, 1942 in Puerto Natales , † May 30, 1987 in Santiago ) was a Chilean football player who took part in the 1962 and 1966 World Cups with the national team of his home country .
Career
Honorino Landa began his professional career in 1959 with the Unión Española association from Santiago de Chile . After six years at Unión Española, he went on to CD Green Cross , an association that was based in the southern Chilean city of Temuco . This made him one of the few Chilean football players who did not earn their living in the country's capital. During his time in Temuco, Landa was twice third with the provincial club in the Chilean Primera División and in both cases narrowly missed participation in the Copa Libertadores , in which the two best teams of the past season take part. Landa and Deportivo Temuco, which was then still known as Green Cross-Temuco, also defeated the national team of the Soviet Union with goalkeeper Lev Yashin 3-1 in a friendly match . In 1969, Landa moved back to his hometown club Unión Española, where other well-known Chilean footballers such as Jorge Toro , World Cup participant from 1962, and Alberto Fouilloux , 70-time Chilean national player and World Cup participant from 1962 and 1966, also played . With the club Landa won the Primera División Chiles in 1973, after finishing second the year before. In the same year he ended his international career.
Honorino Landa made 16 appearances in the national team of Chile . He got eight goals in it. At the age of twenty, he was the second youngest player in the host's squad at the 1962 World Cup and was used in all games except the game for third place against Yugoslavia, as he was sent off in the semi-finals against Brazil. Landa didn't score any goals. Four years later at its second World Cup, the one in England, the Chilean team could not build on the good performance of four years ago and was eliminated after the preliminary round. Landa came to two missions in which the striker again failed to score.
Last years
Honorino Landa said goodbye to the active soccer business in 1973. In the eighties he got cancer . In 1987 his condition worsened so much that he died on May 30, 1987, two days before his 45th birthday in a clinic in Santiago de Chile. In his honor, his former club Unión Española organized a charity match against CD Universidad Católica , which ended 3-0 for Universidad.
