Founded in 1879 on the initiative of Gregorio Chil y Naranjo, the Museo Canario in the historic Vegueta district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has a permanent exhibition on the original population of the Canary Islands. The majority of the completely preserved objects and fragments come from Gran Canaria, some also from the other islands. These include ceramic vessels, idols such as the Ídolo de Tara and more than 200 pintaderas (stamps). There are also stone and bone tools, clothing made from fur and vegetable fibers, vegetable and animal products, the latter also made from mollusks .
