Humberto Carlos Cruz Silva (born December 8, 1939 in Santiago ) is a former Chilean football player. At club level for Santiago Morning , Colo-Colo and ñublense active, he took the national team of his home country at the World Cups in 1962 and 1966 in part.

Career

Club career

Humberto Cruz, born in the Chilean capital Santiago in 1939 , began playing football in his hometown at CD Santiago Morning , after having previously attended the youth academy of CSD Colo-Colo , also located in Santiago. In 1957, the young defender made his debut in the shirt of Santiago Morning, which was then playing in the Primera División , Chile's top football league. Humberto Cruz was active from 1957 to 1962 for Santiago Morning and made 120 league games for his club during this time, in which he scored five goals.

From 1963, Humberto Cruz was then under contract with Colo-Colo, Chile's current record champions. In his first year at the club, he won the Chilean football championship. In the Primera División Colo-Colo had taken first place with a lead of one point over Universidad de Chile . This was followed by a long period of drought. It was not until 1970 that Humberto Cruz was able to call himself Chilean champion again with Colo-Colo. This time in the top division the final match against the up-and-coming Unión Española was decided 2-1 in extra time. With this triumph, the 1970s, which were very successful for Colo-Colo, finally began, in the middle of which the club was the first Chilean club to make it to the final of the Copa Libertadores only, but lost to Independiente Avellaneda from Argentina . However, Humberto Cruz turned his back on Colo-Colo in 1971 after playing there for nine years. During this time, 259 league appearances had accumulated, in which Cruz scored four hits.

After his departure from Colo-Colo, Humberto Cruz went to the second division team Deportivo Ñublense , where he played football for five more years, but soon lost his regular place. In his last year under contract with Ñublense, he was still part of the club's team that reached the first-time promotion of the provincial club to the Primera División. After this success in 1976, the now 37-year-old Humberto Cruz ended his active career as a football player.

National team

Between 1961 and 1970, Humberto Cruz made a total of 57 international matches for the Chilean national football team . He got six hits. He was appointed to the South American squad for the 1962 World Cup in his own country by national coach Fernando Riera . The tournament came a little too early for the young defender, however, and he only made one appearance in the game for third place against Yugoslavia (final score: 1-0). The Chilean team, however, had fought their way through to the semi-finals at their home World Cup, where they ultimately failed against eventual world champions Brazil .

Four years later, Humberto Cruz was nominated by coach Luis Álamos for the 1966 World Cup in England . This time, the now 27-year-old player was an absolute regular and was on the pitch in every Chilean tournament game. However, this world championship was less successful for the men around captain Hugo Villanueva . Already after the preliminary round came the last group D behind the Soviet Union , North Korea and Italy .
