The snow Stock is with a height of 3608  meters the second highest peak of the Urner Alps in Switzerland . However, it is located just under half a kilometer north of the Dammastock ( 3630.3  m ), the highest peak in the Uri Alps, and is only separated from it by the Dammajoch (approx. 3570  m ). Schneestock and Dammastock thus also form the highest elevations of the so-called Winterberg , as the central ridge of the Uri Alps is also called. This drops off quite steeply to the east to the Göschener Tal, whereas the almost completely glaciated west side is far less inclined, where the Rhone glacier reaches up to the summit. The ridge descends from the Schneestock in a north-westerly direction to the Eggstock ( 3556  m ), and in between there is a quite prominent peak at 3583  m , which has no name on the map of Switzerland .

Ascent history

The highest point of the Winterberg was also known as the "Schneestock" until around 1870, so the distinction between Schneestock and Dammastock was blurred.

The first ascent of the Schneestock took place on July 7, 1864 by G. Wenger from Bern, accompanied by the guide Andreas von Weissenfluh. The ascent took place from the hut on Thältistock that was set up the day before , today's Trifthütte , via the Obere Triftlimi. There was heavy drifting snow, which may explain why the Dammastock, which is not very far away and is not particularly difficult to reach from the snowstock, was not climbed at the same time. The latter was climbed three weeks later on a similar route by Albert Hoffmann-Burckhardt from Basel with two guides, including Andreas von Weissenfluh.

A demanding climbing tour is the eastern edge of the Schneestock, which Alfred Amstad and Guido Masetto first climbed in 1935.

Increase opportunities

Usually the Schneestock is climbed as part of an ascent of the Dammastock. The starting point is usually either the Trifthütte ( 2520  m ) to the northwest or the Hotel Belvédère on the southern ramp of the Furka Pass ( 2271  m ). The latter is a very popular ski tour , especially in early summer .

The starting point for an ascent of the eastern edge is the Dammahütte ( 2438  m ). The climbing difficulty is indicated with V +.
