Guido Masetto

Guido Masetto (born March 16, 1914 in Zurich ; † September 18, 2000 ibid) was a Swiss mountaineer , first to climb classic routes in the Uri Alps .

Life

Guido Masetto grew up as the son of Italian immigrants in Zurich, attended a business school and founded a company that produced coffee filters. After the Second World War he was u. a. Thanks to his language skills, he is successful as an entrepreneur in coffee imports, food wholesaling, real estate and other industries.

He was a keen mountaineer from a young age. In the 1930s he formed a strong rope team with Alfred Amstad and his brother Otto Amstad, who succeeded in the first ascent of some of the still classic routes in the Uri Alps . They were early free climbing enthusiasts and used few rock hooks . Their most famous route is the south ridge of the Salbitschijen , which is considered one of the most beautiful ridge routes in the Alps. They mastered the key point in the lower fifth UIAA level of difficulty with just two hooks.
