History and league affiliation
The club was founded in 1909 in what was then the German state of Alsace-Lorraine as the Forbach Sports Club . It emerged from the merger of three local clubs, namely FC Phönix , FC Triumph and FC Hansa . After Lorraine became part of France again after the First World War , it took on its name, which is still valid today, in 1919. As early as the early 1920s and again in the 1930s, the amateur club made it into the national main round in the French club cup competition several times .
After the German invasion in 1940 and the subsequent occupation of large parts of France, Forbach, like the entire Moselle department, belonged to the " CdZ-area Lorraine ", but was not integrated into the new " Reichsgau Westmark" until the liberation of the country at the end of 1944 - as was actually intended . In soccer, however, this integration was completed in 1941; the US Forbach was not strong enough for the Gauliga Westmark .
The Forbachois had their most successful sporting period from 1957, when the USF was promoted to Division 2 and assumed professional status. Her best placement came in her debut season, which she finished sixth. At the end of the 1965/66 season, the club voluntarily withdrew from the second division in view of meager income and returned to amateur status. In the cup, the team reached the first main round in seven of these nine years, made it into the sixteenth finals four times ( 1959 , 1961 , 1964 and 1966 ) and in 1960 - after two 4-1 victories over the two first division clubs FC Metz and Racing Lens - even under the best 16 teams. There US Forbach was defeated by the eventual cup winners AS Monaco only in extra time with 2: 3. In addition, the team reached the final in the Coupe Drago in 1964 ; in that, however, FC Sochaux clearly had the upper hand.
From 1966 to 1971, 1978 to 1980 and most recently 1985/86 and 1987 to 1989 the USF played at least third class . In the past two decades, she has only fluctuated between the fourth and sixth highest division, but reached the sixteenth-finals of the Cup again in 1993 as a fourth division . Also in 2003 , 2006 and 2011 , each as a fifth division, she was back in the national main round. From 2006 to 2010, however, the first team only played their point games in the sixth highest class ( Division d'Honneur ) . An intended merger with the neighboring association Société Gymnastique Marienau failed in 2010 because it was rejected by Marienau's members. In the Coupe de France 2010/11 , the club reached the round of the last 32 teams, but were eliminated 1: 3 against the first division and later champions OSC Lille in front of 6,000 spectators in the sold-out Stade du Schlossberg.
