Roberto Morinini

Roberto Morinini (born July 18, 1951 in Bellinzona ; † March 16, 2012 ) was a Swiss football player and coach .

Career

During his playing career, Morinini was mainly for AC Bellinzona in the National League A and was active in the U-21 team in his home country. In 1983 he started to work as a trainer and trained as the first station at AC Bellinzona. From 1984 to 1988 he led the CS Chênois in the National League B before Morinini then headed the FC Locarno team for five years .

This was followed by further engagements at FC Monthey and FC Lugano . During this time, he finished second with the Ticino in the 1994/95 season in the top division, which entitled to participation in the UEFA Cup . After a first round success against Inter Milan , the team failed in the second round against Slavia Prague . He then went to Italy and took over the management of the third division clubs Atletico Catania and US Avellino . In the 1998/99 season he coached the team of AS Fidelis Andria in the series B . Back in Switzerland he followed the call of FC Sion , where he took the job as head coach. After 22 match days, he was released during the current season with the Valais. Further positions at FC Lugano, Servette FC Genève and the French second division club SCO Angers followed.

For the 2005/06 season he took over the management of Yverdon-Sport FC , which had just been promoted to the Axpo Super League . After a season, the club rose again from the Challenge League and Morinini was sacked in Yverdon. It was only during the 2008/09 season that he worked as a coach again and took a job at FC Luzern , where he replaced the dismissed Ciriaco Sforza . After only six match days, Morinini was kicked out; under his leadership, FC Luzern had only won one point and was bottom of the table. On April 1, 2010, he returned to AC Bellinzona as a coach to replace Alberto Cavasin . On March 21, 2011, he was dismissed from AC Bellinzona after his team suffered a 1-0 defeat against bottom club FC St. Gallen and was thus in the middle of a relegation battle. This was followed by a brief engagement at FC Lugano in May , which ended after a few games.

In the fall of 2010, Morinini was diagnosed with colon cancer. He died on March 16, 2012 of complications from the disease.
