National league

Nationalliga is the general name for various higher sports leagues in Switzerland and Austria . The highest league is referred to as National League A, the second highest as National League B. For example in tennis and rugby there is also a national league C. The lower leagues are usually numbered down from the first division.

In general usage in Switzerland, one speaks of the NLA or NLB, similar to the NBA in the USA.

However , since 2003 the highest Swiss men's soccer league is no longer called National League A, but Super League . In 2007, the highest ice hockey league was in National League A renamed. In handball , the two highest men's leagues together are called the Swiss Handball League (SHL).

National League B

National League B refers to the second highest division, including basketball , baseball, floorball and volleyball . Austria

In Austria, the second highest ice hockey league is known as the national league. The next higher league is the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga , the next lower is the Oberliga . At times the first - and then the second football league were also called that.
