Basketball in Switzerland

The sport of basketball in Switzerland has a major role in the French-speaking Switzerland and in the Italian part of Switzerland , while in the German Switzerland more of a fringe sport represents. The current women's cup winner in 2017 is BC Winterthur from German-speaking Switzerland.

Swiss basketball

The national association Swiss Basketball (FSBA, La Fédération Suisse de Basketball) has 15,000 licensed players. He is a member of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA), Swiss Olympic , the Union des Ligues Européennes de Basketball and the Interest Group for Team Sports (CISE). The association organizes the Swiss Cup and the national teams, takes care of the training of coaches and referees, represents the interests of basketball clubs, elite leagues and regional associations and promotes basketball in general. A Supercup has also existed as part of the Indoor Sports Supercup since 2015 .

National basketball competitions

National league A men

There are eight teams playing in the top national league. After the first half of the season, the best teams contest a playoff for the Swiss championship title. The best eight teams after the first half of the season contest the League Cup.

Men's National League B

There are also fourteen teams playing against each other in the round two. The best eight teams then play play-offs for promotion to National League A. The winner is promoted to the top division. Teams of the 2013/14 season: Academie Friborg U23, Bären Basel , Morges , BCKE , GC Zürich Basketball, Sion Basket , Pully Basket , Swiss Central Basket , Villars Basket .

National League A women

Eight teams play in the top national league. After three rounds, all eight teams contest a playoff for the Swiss championship title. There is no relegation.

Women's National League B

15 teams play a round in two groups. The four best teams in each group contest the final round "Championnat LNBF1" with a round trip. The winning team can be promoted to the NLA. The remaining teams play the rest of the season in the “Championnat LNBF2” in two groups. There is no relegation.

Swiss Cup

In 2009 65 teams took part in the Swiss Cup for men and 38 teams for the Swiss Cup for women. For many years, the Swiss Cup finals were held in the Heiligkreuz sports hall in Freiburg in front of over 3,000 spectators and the television cameras of the western Swiss television TSR and each formed one of the highlights of the basketball season. Today the venue for the final varies again, with the 2016 final in Zurich and the 2017 in Geneva.

SBL Cup

The SBL Cup, the league cup introduced by the original league organization of the national leagues, has existed since 2004 .

National teams

The national teams of women and men each play in Division B in the European Championships. They have not achieved any major international successes.
