The basketball club Winterthur is a Swiss basketball club from Winterthur . Until the summer of 2018, the BCW was the only Swiss basketball club that had both a women's team and a men's team in the National League A. Currently the women play in the national league A and the men in the first division.

history

At the beginning of the 1960s, a group of Hungarian immigrants led by Bela Agoston brought basketball to Winterthur. The then newly founded "Hungaria Winterthur" took part in the second half of the Swiss-German basketball championship for the first time out of competition in autumn 1960. In 1962 the club was renamed BC Winterthur.

During the 1980s, the then men's team played in the 1st National League (the third top division) for several seasons. The women's team under coach Bela Agoston contested the championship in the National League B, with the promotion games in the National League A were just missed a few times. In the 1990s and 2000s the men of the BCW played in the 2nd and 3rd league of the regional association, the women in the 1st national league and after 1997 in the 3rd division of the regional association.

In 2009 Daniel Rašljić became trainer and technical director at Winterthur. Under his leadership, both the men's and women's teams made it to the National League B in 2013. For women, it was the third promotion in three seasons, and for men, the fourth promotion in four seasons. In 2015, both teams were promoted to the highest Swiss league. After trying to catch up in the second half of the game, the women surprisingly managed to win the Swiss Cup in 2017 with a 61:59 victory over the favored Elfic Friborg . and on October 8, 2017, the Winterthur women defeated Swiss champion Hélios Basket 70:65 in the Supercup in Friborg .

In the summer of 2018, BC Winterthur withdrew the men's team from the National League A. The reason given for this was a lack of financial strength for putting together a competitive team and building up their own offspring in the National League B. The former coach and previous head of sports Daniel Rašljić will also take over the coaching position for both women and men after one season - the previous head coach for men, Mitar Trivunovic , left the club for Neuchâtel.

The women managed to win the Swiss Cup for the second time in the 2018/19 season with a 58:56 victory in the final over Elfic Friborg . For the first time in the club's history, the Winterthur basketball players also reached the playoff final series, but lost 3-0 to Friborg. After the season, the club decided to start with the men only in the 1st National League. These had previously reached the playoffs in National League B, but were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
