20 minutes is a free French newspaper. With 2.8 million or, according to the new ONE survey method from Audipresse , 4.28 million readers, it is the most widely read newspaper in France. 20 minutes is published from Monday to Friday in half- Berlin format (23.8 × 32.2 cm). In 2012, 20 minutes employed almost 100 editorial staff.

history

The newspaper was founded in 2002 in a joint venture between the Norwegian media group Schibsted and SIPA Ouest-France, the publisher of the newspaper Ouest-France . 20 minutes was launched in 2002 with regional editions in the eight largest French cities. In 2010 there were four more regional editions and in 2011, in the “most important strategic initiative of the French press since the launch of free newspapers in 2002”, 20 additional and in 2012 a further eight French cities. From then on, 20 minutes was published in the 40 largest cities in France. Currently (2014) there are 12 regional editions that are distributed in 36 cities.

From 2008 the economic crisis, which according to Mikael Jensen, PDG of the Schibsted Media Groupe, led to a collapse in advertising revenues, especially in the USA, Spain, Italy, Portugal and France, also hit the free newspapers. Schibsted therefore launched a cost reduction program for 2009, mainly related to the activity in Spain.

However, the economic situation continued to deteriorate; the three largest providers of free newspapers in France, alongside 20 minutes Bolloré Média with Direct Matin and TF1 with Metronews , accumulated a loss of EUR 20 million in 2013. Schibsted subsequently offered the two competitors to take over 20 minutes . A merger of the three free newspapers was also up for discussion. In 2016, Schibsted sold its 49.3% share to the Belgian media group Groupe Rossel ; Since then, Rossel has been an equal partner with SIPA Ouest France, which still holds 49.3% of the group's shares.

Website

20 minutes has also been running the 20minutes.fr website since 2007 . With over 6 million unique visitors / month, it is the third largest news portal in France after Le Figaro and Le Monde / Huffington Post . The 20minutes.fr editorial team also operates the E24.fr portal , an economic and financial news portal.

After this lost battle for displacement, Schibsted canceled the expansion plans for Germany and Austria.
