General

The Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich is published once a week on Wednesdays in tabloid format . Lucia M. Eppmann has been the editor-in-chief since autumn 2016.

The Tagblatt has also been operating an internet portal since February 2013 .

At the end of 2013, the Zurich City Council terminated the contract with the Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich for the end of 2016 because new submission regulations require a public tender for the concession. It is also being examined whether in future it will be preferable to publish official notifications electronically, as is also being sought at federal and cantonal level. The contract came into effect in 1985 for 10 years and was tacitly extended for another 10 years in 1995 and 2005.

The Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich has a WEMF - certified circulation of 123,886 (previous year 126,594) copies and reaches 112,000 (previous year 110,000) readers (WEMF MACH Basic 2018-II).

history

First edition dated February 23, 1730
Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich - Municipal Official Gazette of August 7, 1923

The Thursday news published for the first time on February 23, 1730 by the Zurich reporting house founded by Hans Jakob Lindinner in the same year are considered the founding newspaper of the Tagblatt . The newspaper renamed itself in 1781 to Thursday paper and 1801 to the twice weekly Zürcherische Wochenblatt . Since 1801, the report house was parallel to the Zurich weekly daily (including Sundays) a Tagblatt der Stadt Zurich with the run of the city police strangers List out. The daily newspaper gradually took over the tasks of the Zürcherisches Wochenblatt , whereupon it only appeared with two pages from 1843 and was finally discontinued entirely. At the end of 1863, the Tagblatt was able to conclude its first contract with the city of Zurich as an official gazette.

With the publication of the free newspaper Züri Leu in 1967, the daily newspaper faced fierce competition on the advertising market. In 1974 it was forced to switch to free distribution and finally, in 1978 , to sell the majority of the report house AG to the publisher of Züri Leu , Jean Frey AG .

Jean Frey AG, for its part, sold a majority of 70% inberichthaus AG to the Tages-Anzeiger in 1982 as part of the "Zürcher Pressandel" . The trade sparked a major public discussion. The Zurich city council called for the creation of a broader sponsorship. The Neue Zürcher Zeitung refused a stake offered by the Tages-Anzeiger , but initially because of the imbalanced rights of the intended partners. An agreement was not reached until 1984, and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung took a 40% stake in the newly created Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich AG. The Tages-Anzeiger and Neue Zürcher Zeitung each held 40% and Jean Frey 20% of the daily newspaper . The newspapers Neue Zürcher Nachrichten and Volksrecht , also requested by the Tages-Anzeiger , had declined to participate.

However, these newspapers and the city council were also represented in a neutral editorial committee, which was supposed to monitor the editorial course and compliance with the editorial statutes. The city was guaranteed an annual concession fee and a profit-sharing scheme. The Tagblatt continued to be printed by Jean Frey, later by the Tages-Anzeiger and from January 1990 by the Neue Zürcher Zeitung .

The negotiations, which lasted almost three years, aimed to restore stability after years of unrest around the city's official gazette. The contract between the city council and the Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich AG, which came into force on January 1, 1985, was therefore given a term of ten years. This ended a long period of uncertainty, and the daily newspaper came out of the loss zone.

In the 1991 inheritance proceedings of Omni Holding des financier Werner K. Rey , to which Jean Frey AG was now part, the Tages-Anzeiger acquired their share in the Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich AG. The majority achieved by the Tages-Anzeiger on the Tagblatt no longer met with resistance. In 2007 he even acquired a further 25% stake in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung subsidiary , the Freie Presse Holding.

When the Norwegian media company Schibsted launched the free newspaper 20 Minuten in Zurich in 1999 and the Swedish media group Metro International Metropol in 2000 , Tamedia and Neue Zürcher Zeitung expanded the daily newspaper into the colorful Zurich Express as a defense measure . The product, which was still the official gazette, was unsuccessful in the advertising and advertising market around 20 Minuten and Metropol . Tamedia threatened to set up a free newspaper under the title Express together with the Berner Zeitung based on the Zürich Express and to enclose the Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich , converted back from the Zürich Express . The threat meant that Tamedia and Berner Zeitung were able to participate in 20 Minuten in 2003 and dispense with the publication of the Express . Metropol had already been ousted from the market by 20 Minuten in 2002. The Zurich Express was then converted back into the Tagblatt of the City of Zurich in mid-2003 with a new layout .

In 2005 the Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich took over the neighborhood newspaper Die Vorstadt , which appears in Zürich-Nord with around 37,000 copies on Wednesdays.

As a result of the regionalization strategy of the Tages-Anzeiger (which was reversed in 2012) with a split edition also for the city of Zurich, the format of the daily newspaper was changed to tabloid format in November 2006 and the frequency of publication from five to just once a week (Wednesdays) reduced, which means that the up-to-date reports from politics, accidents or court proceedings previously published were no longer necessary. The name "Tagblatt" was retained anyway. The reduction to a weekly paper led to inquiries in the city parliament to the city government. This took note of the decision of the owners of the Tagblatt with regret , but saw no violation of the valid contract.

In 2010, the Tagblatt introduced a “German page by Germans for Germans who live in Zurich” for around 30,000 Germans in Zurich, which initially led to heated controversy.

In November 2016, Lokalinfo AG Walter Freys took over 20% of Tamedia and in June 2017 15% of the share capital of Tagblatt der Stadt Zürich AG. Also in June 2017, Tamedia took over the remaining 15% of the NZZ media group , so that Tamedia's stake remained 65%.

On March 10, 2018, it was announced that the 65% share of Tamedia will be taken over by Zeitungshaus AG from Christoph Blocher as part of the sale of Basler Zeitung to Tamedia in the 2nd quarter of 2018 . The Competition Commission approved on 11 October 2018, the acquisition of the Basler Zeitung by Tamedia, whereby the (by the Competition Commission unaudited) acquisition of the share of Tagblatt could be done by the newspaper publishing house AG. Zeitungshaus AG also took over the 35% stake in the Tagblatt from Lokalinfo AG and thus became the sole owner of the Tagblatt .
