The Stade du Hainaut (project name: Stade Nungesser II ) is a football stadium in the French city of Valenciennes , Département Nord . The Valenciennes football club plays its home games here.

history

In 2008, construction work began on the modern football stadium. It is being built in the Nungesser district, south of Valenciennes. There is already a sports hall and tennis courts nearby, and since June 2006 it has been accessible from the city by tram.

It has a capacity of 24,926 viewers for football matches compared to the 16,547 in the old Stade Nungesser . Up to 40,000 spectators are possible for concerts or other events.

In July 2009, raised Administrative Court Lille , the building permit for the stadium. This judgment was upheld by the Douai Higher Administrative Court in October. The opening of the arena was postponed to January 2011.

In October 2010 the president of the Valenciennes FC, Francis Decourrière, announced that the stadium would be ready in spring 2011 and that Valenciennes FC could play in the new stadium in the 2011/12 season. The cost of 75 million euros shared by the community association Communauté d'agglomération de Valenciennes Métropole (55 million euros) and the region Nord-Pas-de-Calais (20 million euros). According to a decision by the municipal owners, the Nungesser II will initially be named after the region in which it is located and will be called Stade du Hainaut. A later renaming by a sponsor is not excluded. Construction began in May 2008; The opening took place on July 26th, 2011, when the local FC Valenciennes Borussia Dortmund received in front of 22,778 spectators and lost 1-0.

The new stadium celebrated its international premiere on May 27, 2012. The French national football team welcomed Iceland to a friendly for the European Championship 2012 . After a 2-0 deficit at the break, the hosts won in the end with 3-2 goals.

In women's football , the Stade du Hainaut was one of nine stadiums at the 2019 World Cup ; At the premiere of the Tournoi de France in spring 2020, three of the six encounters took place in it.
