The Stade Nungesser was a football stadium in the Nungesser district of the French city of Valenciennes . It was the home ground of the Valenciennes football club . Opened in 1930, the Stade Nungesser on Avenue de Reims was named after the fighter pilot Charles Nungesser .

history

A year after it opened, the stadium got a cycling track . In 1938 the capacity was 13,000. In 1953 an honor stand was built, which increased the number of seats to 21,500. The attendance record dates back to March 13, 1955 from the Valenciennes match against CS Sedan (3-0), which was followed by 21,268 spectators.

In the meantime, the arena was renovated in 1992, in poor condition, as a decision in the first division stadiums required at least 20,000 seats. The cycling track was removed and a covered grandstand was built behind the gate. Shortly after completion, the roof was destroyed by a storm. When Valenciennes was relegated from the first division , the plans were put on hold.

In 2006 the club returned to the top division and the Stade Nungesser was renovated again. The capacity was then 16,547 places. In 2007 the association installed an electronic scoreboard .

Since the plans to convert the stadium failed due to lack of space and disputes with residents, a new stadium was built elsewhere. It was originally supposed to be called Stade Nungesser II , but was actually named Stade du Hainaut after a decision by the municipal owners after the region in which it is located . Construction began in May 2008 and the opening took place on July 26, 2011. It offers space for 25,000 people at football matches and up to 40,000 people at concerts.

After the inauguration of the new venue, the demolition of the old home of Valenciennes FC began on November 2, 2011 and was completed on February 23, 2012.
