Sergei Yakovlevich Sokolov (born September 26 . Jul / 8. October  1897 greg. 1897 in Krjaschim , Saratov ; † 20th May 1957 in Leningrad ) was a Soviet scientist and is considered a pioneer of ultrasound -based materials testing .

Sokolov had been employed as a scientist at the Leningrad Institute of Electrical Engineering since 1925, after graduating there. His research area was acoustics , especially ultrasound and its application. In 1927 he developed techniques to transmit sound through metal without significant absorption. Based on this technique, he was able to track down structural damage in metals in 1928. However, at this point the technology was not advanced enough to be used in practice. In 1933 he became a professor at the institute. Sokolow also had the idea of building a microscope with the help of ultrasound, which could have a resolution similar to that of an optical microscope. At the end of the 1930s, this was technically possible.
