Jacques Glassmann (born July 22, 1962 in Mulhouse ) is a former French football player . In the 1992/93 season he uncovered a bribery scandal in the French Division 1 , in which he himself was involved.

Career

Glassmann began his professional career with the French first division club Racing Strasbourg . He played his first game in professional football on November 22, 1978 at the age of 16 in the round of 16 of the UEFA Cup against MSV Duisburg . Although he was only used once in his first season in 1978/79 , he was able to celebrate the French championship with his colleagues at the end of the season - the only one in the club's history to this day. In addition, the semi-finals of the French Cup were reached. In the following season 1979/80 the club was able to reach the quarter-finals in the European Cup . At the same time, Glassmann was also used in the second team. In 1980 he won the title of Division 3 (East) and the Coupe d'Alsace with Strasbourg II .

From 1984 to 1987 Glassmann played for his hometown club FC Mulhouse in Division 2 , where he immediately became a regular and was used in 97 games in three years. In 1987 he went to second division FC Tours for a year .

In 1988 Glassmann moved to the US Valenciennes-Anzin , which also played in the second division. At Valenciennes he was also an important support in the team. In 1992 he was promoted to Division 1 . On the third last day of the 1992/93 season there was a duel between the relegation-threatened US Valenciennes and Olympique Marseille , which at that time led the table by four points. As the final of the UEFA Champions League against AC Milan was due six days later for Marseille and the French association refused to postpone the league game, it came to a scandal ( The OM-VA affair ) . Marseille player Jean-Jacques Eydelie contacted the three players Jorge Burruchaga , Christophe Robert and Jacques Glassmann on behalf of General Manager Jean-Pierre Bernès . Glassmann and his two teammates agreed to help ensure that Marseille does not lose and no Olympique player is injured. For this they should receive 250,000 francs (around 38,000 euros).

Valenciennes actually lost the game, but before the encounter Glassmann had felt remorse and confessed the attempted bribe to his coach and the club president, who immediately protested to the referee. The game was finally canceled, Marseille was stripped of the championship title and moved to the second division for the 1994/95 season. Valenciennes was relegated from the first division in 1993 and was not punished any further. Glassmann also got away with impunity because of his confession. In 1995, he was awarded the FIFA Fair Play Prize for his courageous commitment and honesty . Glassmann had already left Valenciennes in 1994 and joined US Maubeuge in the National 2 in the 1994/95 season .

After the bribery scandal was uncovered and during the subsequent court hearings, Glassmann was sometimes massively attacked and regarded as a traitor, so that in 1995 he left metropolitan France to start a new life with his family on the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean .
