Johan Micoud [ ʒɔˈɑ̃ miˈku ] (born July 24, 1973 in Cannes ) is a former French football player . He played in the attacking midfield in the position of the so-called playmaker . Today he is a winemaker in the Pomerol region .

Career

society

Micoud began his professional career in 1992 in the French first division at AS Cannes . In 1996 he moved to Girondins Bordeaux , where he won his first title in 1999 with the French championship . In 2000 he moved to the Italian Serie A for AC Parma , with whom he won the Italian Cup in 2001/02 .

In 2002 Micoud then moved to the Bundesliga for Werder Bremen , where he quickly became an undisputed leader as “le chef”. The Frenchman made his first division debut in Germany on September 10, 2002 against 1. FC Nürnberg . In the same game he scored his first league goal for the SVW . During his time in Bremen he was one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga. For four years he shaped the playful style of the Werder team and played a major role in their rise to the top team. With Johan Micoud, Werder won the so-called double in 2004 , that is the German championship and the DFB Cup , and qualified for the Champions League three times in a row . Especially in the Champions League games for Werder Bremen, Johan Micoud regularly grew beyond himself and shone as a strategist as well as a scorer of important goals.

Micoud was dangerous for goals and was involved in many goals as a preparer. His great strengths were the sophisticated technique, the brilliant overview of the game, the team friendliness and a quick grasp - all of this made him a key figure in the fast and technically demanding combination game. Werder coach Thomas Schaaf said of his former number 10: “I've never seen a player who can move the game so quickly.” In 2006 Micoud moved back to his home country, Girondins Bordeaux . On May 10, 2008, Laurent Blanc , coach of Girondins de Bordeaux, announced that Johan Micoud would not receive a new contract for the coming season.

On September 18, 2008, Johan Micoud announced the end of his 18-year professional career in an interview with the French sports newspaper L'Équipe . Despite some offers from French clubs, "this is the right time to quit".

After his career, Micoud bought a winery together with other players ( Matthieu Chalmé ) and brought out his first Merlot in 2009.

National team

Despite his class, Johan Micoud was unable to make his big international breakthrough, especially with his country's national team . One of the main reasons for this is called Zinédine Zidane . The three-time FIFA World Player of the Year played in the same position, played a similar style and was the same age as Micoud, in short: he blocked his development in the national team, so that Micoud only made 17 appearances here. At the European Football Championship 2000 he was in the squad of the French team and won the title with her (one use). Micoud was also in the French squad at the 2002 World Cup and played in two games. The midfielder made his World Cup debut on June 6, 2002 in the first round match against Uruguay , where he replaced the injured Zidane over the full 90 minutes.

After the 2002 World Cup, Micoud was not nominated for a year and a half despite strong performances at SV Werder Bremen, which was also due to the low status of the Bundesliga abroad. In the opinion of Fabrice Jouhaud, the football director of the sports magazine L'Équipe , the Bundesliga is “terribly old-fashioned”, “tactical imagination” is not available and the training places emphasis on perseverance and strength. On March 25, 2004 he was finally nominated by national coach Jacques Santini for the test match on March 29, 2004 in Rotterdam against the Netherlands and also used there. Despite this commitment and despite winning the German championship and the DFB Cup with SV Werder Bremen, he was not nominated for the French squad for the 2004 European Championship in Portugal , after which he resigned from the national team.

Others

  • Micoud is seen as an idiosyncratic and public-shy player who is aloof from the mechanisms of the football business and the demands of the public. During his time at Werder Bremen, for example, he avoided interviews at times, especially with the German media. He often emphasizes the importance of the collective for success and is skeptical about his status as a star .
  • The Bremen playmaker was - incomprehensible to many - not considered by equipe trainer Jacques Santini for the 2004 European Championship. In the quarter-final match between the French and Greece, team-mate Angelos Charisteas from Bremen was the only player to win. At the moment of success, he had a very special gesture ready. After the hit, he lifted his jersey and the name “Micoud” appeared on the t-shirt underneath.
