Player career

Goalkeeper Philippe Montanier was born on November 15, 1964 in Vernon , a town of around 25,000 in Normandy in northern France . He spent his youth at the regional club Évreux AC, from where in 1987 the then second division SM Caen took him under contract. In his first season, Montanier managed to move up to Division 1 with the club , having occupied second place behind Racing Strasbourg in Group B of Division 2 . In the promotion playoffs Caen prevailed against Olympique Alès , Olympique Lyon and Chamois Niort and rose to the first French league for the first time in the club's history. There he managed to stay in the league with sixteen in the first season. Also in Montaniers for the time being last year at SM Caen, Division 1 1989/90 , the class was held with the same placement.

After 55 league games for SM Caen, Philippe Montanier moved to FC Nantes for one year in 1990 , but could not prevail there and only played seven league games before he returned to Caen and was again in goal for the northern French club for the following three years. During this time there are 73 missions. In Division 1 1991/92 , SM Caen achieved his best position to date in the French first division with Philippe Montanier in the gate in fifth. In the two following years you finished eleventh and sixteenth.

In the summer of 1994 Philippe Montanier left SM Caen a second time and played for Toulouse FC from then on . This club had just been relegated as the penultimate from Division 1. In the second division, however, the direct promotion was missed. It was not until 1996/97 that Toulouse managed to return to the French football club as second behind LB Châteauroux . After his second promotion as a football player, Philippe Montanier changed employers again and now played for FC Gueugnon in Division 2. The 1997/98 season ended in eleventh place in the table. The following year Gueugnon finished sixth and missed the return to Division 1 by seven points against ES Troyes AC .

After 79 games for FC Gueugnon, Philippe Montanier played for another year from 1999 to 2000 for AS Saint-Étienne football, which had just returned to the first division as division 2 champions. As a climber, Saint-Étienne landed on a good sixth place in the table, but Montanier was not a regular goalkeeper and was only used four times in league games. In the summer of 2000 he ended his footballing career at the age of 35.

Coaching career

After the end of his playing career, Philippe Montanier became a coach. He started as assistant coach to Robert Nouzaret . In this form Montanier worked in 2001 for Toulouse FC , from 2001 to 2002 for SC Bastia and from 2002 to 2004 for the national team of the Ivory Coast .

In the summer of 2004, Philippe Montanier took over the US Boulogne in the fourth class Championnat de France Amateur . In his first season he was promoted to the National Championships , where you could assert yourself as a climber with fifth place. A year later, Boulogne was promoted to Ligue 2 just two years after being promoted from the fourth division . This came about through a second place in the National, only behind Clermont Foot . In the second division, the US Boulogne was only just able to prevent direct relegation under Montanier, the gap to the first relegated Chamois Niort was two points in sixteenth. In the following year, however, the US Boulogne surprisingly secured a promotion place in Ligue 2, after they had finished Ligue 2 in 2008/09 in third with one point ahead of the first non-promoted Racing Strasbourg . The club, which had been in fourth class five years earlier, was promoted to the top French league for the first time in the club's history. Coach Philippe Montanier then resigned from his post and was replaced by Laurent Guyot , who was relegated with the club.

A little later, Philippe Montanier succeeded Antoine Kombouaré as the new coach of Valenciennes FC in Ligue 1. In Valenciennes , Montanier was the coach for the following two years and reached positions ten and twelve in Ligue 1. In the summer of 2011, the Spanish first division Real signed him Sociedad San Sebastián as the new coach. After only twelfth place in the 2011/12 Primera División was achieved in the first year , Real Sociedad ended the 2012/13 season in fourth under Montanier , not only achieving the best placement for many years, but also participating in the qualification for UEFA Champions League 2013/14 . Coach Montanier left Real Sociedad after this success and went back to his French homeland. His successor in Donostia-San Sebastián was his assistant Jagoba Arrasate .

In the same year Philippe Montanier took over the coaching position at the French first division club Stade Rennes . With the ambitious club he reached twelfth place in his first season, and in the following year, with ninth place, only a midfield place jumped out. In the Coupe de France 2013/14 Montanier's team reached the final after successes over AJ Auxerre , OSC Lille and SCO Angers , where they lost 2-0 to EA Guingamp . On January 20, 2016, Montanier was replaced by the experienced Rolland Courbis after having drawn numerous draws with the team in the course of the season so far .

On June 27, 2016, the English second division Nottingham Forest announced the signing of Philippe Montanier as their new coach. On January 14, 2017, Nottingham Forest announced that it had parted ways with Montanier after a series of disappointing results.

In May 2018 he signed a two-year contract with the French second division club RC Lens . In the 2019/20 season, Montanier reached 5th place. The rise failed in regulation.

In the next season, after the turn of the year 2019/20, Lens only won one of seven games and slipped to third place by the end of February 2020. Montanier was released on February 25, 2020.

On June 10, 2020, he signed a contract as a coach with Belgian first division Standard Liège .
