Mehdi Carcela-González ( Arabic المهدي كارسيلا, DMG al-Mahdī Kārisīlā ; * July 1, 1989 in Liège ) is a Belgian football player of Moroccan - Spanish descent.

After several club changes, the midfielder has been playing for the Belgian first division club Standard Liège again since January 2018 . After he was called up for the Belgian national junior team three times between 2009 and 2010 and was used in two games, he has played for Morocco , his mother's home country, since 2011 .

Career

Carcela-González began his professional career in 2008 in the Standard Liège first team . The offensive player made his debut in the Belgian top division on September 13, 2008 against KV Kortrijk . He was substituted on for Igor de Camargo in the 81st minute ; the game was won 2-0. He also made his first appearance at European club level on December 18, 2008, when he was substituted on for Wilfried Dalmat in the 65th minute of the group game of the UEFA Cup against VfB Stuttgart . The game in Stuttgart was lost 3-0. At the end of his debut season, Standard Liège became Belgian champion; the Supercup was also won.

In the following season, Carcela-González advanced to the quarter-finals of the Europa League with Standard . Eighth place was achieved in the championship and second place in Group B in the play-offs for the Europa League starting positions. This season Carcela-González played a total of ten European Cup games (five each in the UEFA Champions League and Europa League) .

In August 2011 Carcela-González moved to Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia .

On September 1, 2013, Carcela-González returned to Liège. There he played until summer 2015 and then moved to Portugal to Benfica Lisbon . After a year he moved to the Spanish club FC Granada . From there he was awarded to Olympiacos Piraeus in summer 2017 and from February 2018 to Standard Liège. At the beginning of June 2018, Carcela-González officially moved back to Standard Liège.

National team

Carcela-González was born to a Spanish father and a Moroccan mother in Liège and grew up there. He played for the Belgian U-21 national team (7 games, 1 goal) and also made two senior appearances for Belgium before deciding in December 2010 to play for Morocco from now on. He made his debut for the North Africans on February 9, 2011 in a 3-0 win over Niger . He was in Morocco's squad for the 2018 World Cup . After a 2-2 draw against Spain and two 0-1 defeats against Portugal and Iran , Morocco was the last in Group B to be eliminated from the tournament. Carcela-González was only used against Portugal.

After that, he was no longer part of the Moroccan national team for a long time until he was reinstated in the friendlies against Burkina Faso and Niger in September 2019. To date (as of September 10, 2019) he has been used in 24 international matches for Morocco.
