Maxime Lestienne (born June 17, 1992 in Mouscron ) is a Belgian football player on the position of midfielder .

Career

youth

Max Lestienne, as he is sometimes also called, began his active football career at the age of four, when he was accepted into the offspring of his home club Excelsior Mouscron in 1996 . There he went through various youth league classes until 2009 and, as a 16-year-old, came to his first appearances as a professional football player in 2008.

Professional career

Excelsior Mouscron

He made his league and professional debut on December 20, 2008 in a 5-1 home win over his future club Club Bruges. In the game he came on in the 80th minute for the South African Asanda Sishuba . When he came to another brief assignment on January 31, 2009, he then no longer played in the Jupiler Pro League and was mainly used in the youth.

With the beginning of the 2009/10 season , Lestienne came increasingly to longer league appearances. In the first two games he was still on the field for a few minutes, in the third encounter he completed 90 minutes before he was substituted. Previously, he made the template for the 1-0 lead in the game; the match ended in a 2-2 draw. By far the best time at Mouscron he had between the seventh and twelfth round of the current season, when he was involved in every game at least once with a goal or an assist.

He scored his first professional goal on September 19, 2009 in a 1: 3 away defeat against SV Zulte Waregem , when he hit the opponent's goal in the ninth minute after submission by Jonathan Aspas Juncal . While Lestienne increasingly performed well, top European clubs such as FC Everton , OSC Lille or PSV Eindhoven became aware of the Belgian talent. Some Belgian clubs like RSC Anderlecht , Standard Lüttich or FC Bruges also had an eye on Lestienne.

After Excelsior Mouscron got more and more into financial difficulties and wages were not paid for a long time, the entire team squad went on strike, which is why the club could not muster a team in three consecutive games. When the Belgian football association Koninklijke Belgische Voetbalbond took the club out of regular play on December 28, 2009 , annulled all previous games and rated them in favor of the respective opponents, all match contracts, including Lestiennes, were deemed invalid and the players were released for transfer .

The coach of Excelsior Mouscron said in November 2009 that the next two years would be decisive for Lestienne and would show whether he was ready for a club abroad. In contrast to Romelu Lukaku , probably the greatest Belgian football talent, he saw Lestienne as too young from the level of play.

Club Bruges

On January 6, 2010 Lestienne found a new club in Club Bruges ; he signed a two-and-a-half year contract near Bruges, which will expire in June 2012. To date, the midfielder has already made three league appearances for the Belgian first division club. In addition to the 20 league games (3 goals, 4 assists) that he played for Excelsior Mouscron, he also made two appearances in the 2009/10 Belgian Cup .

On February 18, 2010 Lestienne ran for the first time in Europe when he came on in the first leg of the sixteenth-finals of the UEFA Europa League against Valencia CF ten minutes before the end of the game for Joseph Akpala ; Bruges won the game 1-0. Almost two years later, on February 16, 2012, Lestienne scored his first goal in the European Cup when he scored the 1-0 in the Europa League sixteenth-final first leg against the German Bundesliga club Hannover 96 ; Bruges still lost the game 1: 2.

al-Arabi

In the summer of 2014, al-Arabi signed Lestienne, but loaned him to CFC Genoa for the 2014/15 season .

PSV Eindhoven (loan)

In July 2015, PSV Eindhoven announced the loan of Lestienne. The Dutch club secured a purchase option for the summer of 2016. After he made outstanding performances in the preliminary round, especially in the Champions League , he was out for several months due to the death of his parents. At the end of the season he won the championship title with PSV.

Rubin Kazan

At the beginning of the 2016/17 season, Lestienne moved to the Russian club Rubin Kazan for four years . In the winter of 2017, Kazan had financial problems, so the club was ready to terminate the contract early.

Málaga CF

Indeed, on January 31, 2018, the contract with Kazan was terminated and Lestienne signed a new contract for the remainder of the season with Spanish club Málaga , which this season played in the Primera División , the top Spanish league.

Standard Liege

In July 2018, Lestienne moved to Belgian first division Standard Liège on a free transfer , where he signed a four-year contract.

International

Lestienne gained his first international experience in the Belgian U-17 national team , for which he played until 2009. On September 17, 2009, he came to a use for the U-18 selection of Belgium by making his debut in an international match against Luxembourg and thereby contributed a goal in the 3-1 win in the 43rd minute of the game. Since the end of 2009, the midfielder was in the national squad of the Belgian U-19 team and played for them in numerous friendly matches. In the qualification for the U-19 European Championship , he did not play. At the tournament itself he was on the field in all three group games. Belgium were eliminated after these group matches.

He also played mostly friendly matches for the U-21 national team , but also two qualifying games for the U-21 European Championship in 2013 . In the squad of the senior team , he was appointed for the first time on May 29, 2013 in a friendly against the USA, without actually playing. The next appointment to the squad took place in October 2019 for the qualifying games for the 2020 European Championship against San Marino and Kazakhstan.
