Südstadt (Cologne)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Südstadt is an area of Cologne in the city center district . Within the city district, the Südstadt is geographically in the southern area of Cologne 's Neustadt-Süd district . The Südstadt is not an independent administrative district in the Cologne city structure. Rather, the southern part of Cologne is an area that is generally referred to in the Cologne dialect as the so-called Veedel [ˈfeːdəl]. Although the term Veedel translated into High German means city quarter , in Cologne this is not the same as the actual term of a city quarter. Rather, a Veedel like Cologne's Südstadt is a rather smaller urban area with a certain or special character, similar to the Kiezen in Berlin. The southern part of Cologne has the reputation of being one of the most traditional - so strongly influenced by the typical Cologne mentality - areas in Cologne.

location

Since the southern part of the city is not a cartographically delimited area in the official Cologne city structure, the area cannot be delimited exactly. In addition, there are several and also rather strongly diverging perspectives for the term Südstadt in Cologne, which, in the absence of a more precise definition, reveal a rather inconsistent use of the term. An exact and binding area delimitation in the sense of all term uses must therefore appear rather difficult.

In a narrow sense, however, the area between the streets Vorgebirgstraße, Sachsenring (eastern part), Chlodwigplatz (southern part), Ubierring, Agrippinaufer and the embankment of the southern track of the Deutsche Bundesbahn could at least be the actual core area or the origin of the geographical term of the southern city be seen.

In popular parlance, but also for tourism or advertising purposes, other streets or even larger areas in the adjoining peripheral areas are very often assigned to the southern part of the city in the narrow sense, such as B. Severinstrasse, which is actually located in the so-called Severinsviertel , which, according to a few perspectives, also represents an independent Veedel . In addition, the area around the Volksgartenstraße in the area of the city park Volksgarten often as part of the saw Southtown , as is the also directly to the southern part bordering the narrow sense Rheinauhafen .

Occasionally, however, the term Südstadt in Cologne is incorrectly equated with the Neustadt-Süd district or as a generic term e.g. due to the congruence with the partial term Süd . B. used for the southern Cologne districts Neustadt-Süd , Bayenthal and Raderberg and Marienburg .

However, the following explanations here are also devoted to the clearer delimitation due to only the term Cologne's Südstadt in the aforementioned narrower core perspective. This is also because the above-mentioned areas of Severinsviertel and Rheinauhafen tend to be inconsistent and therefore sometimes superficial and rather contradictory for outsiders at the same time as a separate Veedel or such. For example, the Severinsviertel would have to be seen as a Veedel within the Veedel Südstadt or similar.

Cartographic areas

The northern part of Bonner Strasse runs from north to south in the southern part of Cologne, dividing the area almost symmetrically into almost two equal parts. While the part of the southern part to the west of Bonner Strasse is more dominated by residential developments and various larger building complexes belonging to the local electricity supplier Rheinenergie , the eastern part also has a somewhat larger focus on gastronomic offers, such as B. in the form of restaurants and pubs . In addition to larger parks such as the Römerpark , the Südstadt campus of the Technical University of Cologne is a larger public institution with a corresponding student flair.

Adjacent areas

Two Cologne Veedel , which are also well-known for tourists, border directly on the southern part of the city , namely the Severinsviertel , which is also known as the Vringsviertel and the relatively new and partly very modern Rheinauhafen .

Delimitation to the Parkstadt Süd planning area

The Parkstadt Süd area in Cologne , which is currently only in the planning stage, must be distinguished from Südstadt . Despite its location right next to Südstadt, the planning area does not belong to either Südstadt or the Neustadt-Süd district . Rather, Parkstadt Süd belongs to the Rodenkirchen district and is currently part of the Bayenthal and Raderberg districts .

architecture

Despite the very severe destruction of Cologne in the Second World War , the cityscape in Cologne's Südstadt is still very much characterized by historical facades from the Wilhelminian era . This means that the Südstadt, along with Cologne's old town near Cologne Cathedral and the noble district of Marienburg, just a little further south, is one of the few areas in Cologne where there is still a more cohesive historical development. In some cases there are even almost entire streets with a strong influence on the classic architecture from the turn of the century around 1900. A striking example of this is Teutoburger Strasse , where the alley character that was originally much more widespread in pre-war Cologne has also been almost completely preserved. According to a typical inner city architecture, in the area of the residential development in the southern part of the city there are almost exclusively multi-family houses built directly next to each other, on the ground floors of which there can also be many restaurants with shops and restaurants, especially on Bonner Straße as the central shopping street in the core area.

carnival

The Südstadt is considered to be a center of the Cologne Carnival . In particular, almost all of the larger Cologne carnival clubs have their headquarters here. The far beyond well-known beyond the borders of Cologne Rosenmontagszug traditionally has its beginning at the Chlodwigplatz in Cologne's Südstadt . With the beginning of the so-called street carnival , numerous events take place on the streets and squares, as well as in the bars of the southern part of the city .

Prominent residents

In the southern part of Cologne live some well-known personalities throughout Germany, such as B. Anke Engelke , Marie-Luise Marjan , Gaby Köster , Mariele Millowitsch and Wolfgang Niedecken , whose parents' house is even in the Severinsviertel, which borders directly on the southern part of the city. The brass pop band Querbeat has their studio in Cologne's Südstadt.
