Trendy district (depending on the context, also Kiez , trendy or trendy district ) is a slang term for a city district characterized by a special socio-cultural milieu . The name is used in different contexts for different urban quarters. The term is widely used in travel guides , tabloid magazines , and in descriptions and advertisements of the real estate market .

Districts with youth culture or students , but also districts with increased leisure activities or nightlife are also referred to as trendy districts, as are alternative living quarters , lesbian and gay districts , artist or red light districts .

Residential areas that are referred to as trendy areas can be understood as urban sociotopes . These trendy districts offer specific social groups a living space that encourages the respective group. In particular, low rents and a central location favor the influx of students or artists. Well-connected block edge districts with a large number of old buildings are particularly popular with city residents thanks to local transport and cycling infrastructure . Shops and facilities corresponding to the respective social group promote the attractiveness of the residential area for the respective group. Student, alternative and artistic districts are often subject to the mechanisms of gentrification with increasing popularity and increasing incomes of former students .
