ar-Rayyan ( Arabic الريان, DMG ar-Raiyān ) is one of eight parishes in Qatar . The main settlement is the city of the same name ar-Rayyan , which occupies the entire eastern part, largely surrounds the metropolis of Doha and acts as a suburb. The extensive area of largely undeveloped areas in the southwest is also under the administration of the municipality. The municipality had a total of 605,712 inhabitants at the 2015 census.

ar-Rayyan borders on five municipalities: al-Chaur in the north, Umm Salal in the northeast, al-Shahaniyah in the west, Doha in the east and al-Wakra in the southeast. It is divided into two main sections; the west consists of scattered rural settlements, agricultural land, and open desert; and the east consists of the city of ar-Rayyan, a suburb created by Doha's growth to the west.

The Doha metro network is currently being expanded and will be connected to ar-Rayyan by 2020. Another project is the Education City , which is being built here. The Ahmed bin Ali Stadium is currently being expanded to host games of the 2022 World Cup .

history

The municipality of ar Rayyan was founded in 1972 by the Ministry of Municipal and Urban Planning as an independent municipal administration.

In 2004, the al-Jumailiya community was merged with the ar-Rayyan community, and the Jarayan at-Batna community was divided between the ar-Rayyan community and al-Wakra community. The Doha Industrial Area, also known as Zone 58, was split off from ar-Rayyan and integrated into the Doha Municipality, making it an exclave of Doha.

In 2014, the northern ash-Shahaniyah area was separated from the ar-Rayyan community in order to establish its own community. As a result of the spin-off, about 35% of the area of ar-Rayyan was transferred to the new municipality.
