Luis Carlos Meyer
Luis Carlos Meyer (aka Luis Mateo Meyer ; born September 21, 1916 in Barranquilla ; † November 7, 1998 in New York City ), known as El Rey Del Porro and El Negro , was a Colombian singer and composer .
Meyer made his debut at the age of seventeen in the bar Chancleta del Barrio Bajo in his hometown. He later performed with the Atlántico Jazz Band and recorded in Bogotá Porros, Cumbias, Guabinas and Torbellinos with the orchestras of Milciades Garavito , Alberto Ahumada and Francisco Chistancho . He was also successful with appearances in the hotels Granada, Regina and Monteblanco and in several radio stations in South and Central America.
In 1946 he went to Mexico and recorded songs such as Micaela , El gallo tuerto and Linda jarochita with the orchestra of Rafael de Paz . He then traveled to Canada, where he lost all of his property in a fire, and arrived in New York in 1956. There he worked with the orchestra of Xavier Cugat and performed in El Copacabana , Fantasy and Chateau Madrid .
Meyer's songs were recorded by Pedro Infante , Juan Arbizo , Jony López , Juan García Esquivel , Ninón Sevilla , Beny Moré and Lola Flores , by Billo Frómetas Caracas Boys and Sonora Matancera with the singers Israel del Pino and Domingo Jauma . In 1993, Meyer suffered a heart attack and a stroke and partially lost his memory. He lived in shelters for the homeless and was admitted to New York hospitals several times. From 1994 he was housed in a nursing home in the Bronx.
