Lola Flores

María Dolores Flores Ruiz (* 21st January 1923 in Jerez de la Frontera ; † 16th May 1995 in Madrid ), known by the stage name Lola Flores was a popular Spanish singer , flamenco - dancer and actress . She was also called La Faraona (the pharaoh).

Life

Lola Flores was born in the Roma district of San Miguel in Jerez de la Frontera ( Cádiz ). As a girl she danced and sang in her father's tavern, Pedro Flores ( El Comino ). At the age of twelve she was known as a dancer in local artistic circles. She later sang songs by her great role models Concha Piquer and Estrellita Castro .

In 1939, at the age of 16, Lola Flores made her debut at the Teatro Villamarta de Jerez in the play "Luces de España". At the side of the dancing couple Rafael Ortega and Custodia Marchena and the guitarist Melchor de Marchena she sang Bautizá con manzanilla .

She celebrated her great success as an artist couple with Manolo Caracol , with whom she worked until 1951. In 1958 she married the guitarist Antonio González Batista ("El Pescaílla"). She has three children with him: Dolores, better known as Lolita , Antonio and Rosario , all three of whom became singers.

She showed her strong temperament and her presence as an actress in various films between 1939 and 1987, where she usually took on roles as a " gypsy ". She was close friends with the actresses Carmen Sevilla and Paquita Rico .

In 1962 she was honored with the Lazo de Dama de Isabel la Católica knighthood . In 1967 she received the gold medal of the Círculo de Bellas Artes .

In 1990 she received an honor show in Miami, in which her friends Celia Cruz , Rocío Jurado and the singer Julio Iglesias took part.

In 1994 she received the Spanish medal of honor "Medalla al merito del trabajo" for her life's work as well as an honor show in which Rocío Jurado , Gracia Montes and María Vidal took part.

Lola Flores died of breast cancer on May 16, 1995 at the age of 72 . After her ceremonial laying out in the Centro Cultural de la Villa in Madrid , she was buried in the Cementerio de la Almudena in Madrid. Around 300,000 people attended her funeral, including artists such as Carmen Sevilla , Rocío Jurado , María Dolores Pradera and Joan Manuel Serrat . 14 days after her death, her son Antonio died of an overdose. He was buried next to his mother. Her granddaughter, Alba Flores, is a well-known Spanish actress.

Alongside Rocio Jurado and Concha Piquer, Lola Flores is the most popular singer in the Copla andaluza .
