Cistercian Abbey of Mercoire
The Cistercian Abbey of Mercoire was a French monastery of the Cistercian sisters in Cheylard-l'Évêque in the Lozère department from around 1207 to 1792 . It belonged to the diocese of Mende and was in the former province of Gévaudan .
history
Before 1207, the Mazan Cistercian Abbey founded the women's monastery of Notre-Dame de Mercoire , donated by Guillaume de Randon south of Cheylard-l'Évêque in the forest of Mercoire, on the Mercoire brook , 1200 meters above sea level, to accommodate female family members of the monks . The name Mercoire goes back to a Mercury column, which is said to have been on site and which was replaced by the monastery. Mercoire Monastery, which at times had up to 50 members, existed until it was dissolved by the French Revolution in 1792. The remains of the monastery are now part of a farm with tourist accommodation. The beast of Gévaudan raged among other things in the vicinity of the monastery.
