In 1995 he received his doctorate with distinction from the University of Hamburg and the German Electron Synchrotron under Wilfried Buchmüller ; his dissertation was entitled "The Electroweak Phase Transition". After positions at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge , he completed his habilitation in 1999 at the University of Heidelberg, where he worked as a research assistant from 1998 to 2000. In the winter semester 1999/2000 he took over a professorship in Munich. In the following years he worked at CERN (2000–2002) and at the German Electron Synchrotron (2002–2004). Since the winter semester 2004/2005 he has been professor for theoretical particle physics and cosmology in Heidelberg.

His main research interests are physics beyond the Standard Model and cosmology , especially cosmological inflation .
