Lists of aviation accidents

On October 18, 1989, an Ilyushin Il-76 of the Soviet Air Force crashed into the Caspian Sea a few minutes after taking off from the Nasosnaja military airfield ( Soviet Union , today Sumqayıt , Azerbaijan ) . All 57 occupants died in the crash.

plane

The aircraft was a six-year-old Ilyushin Il-76 MD with the aircraft registration СССР-76569.

course

The Il-76 took off from the Nasosnaja military airfield near Sumqayıt in today's Azerbaijan with the Shovtnewe military airfield near Bolhrad in today's Ukraine as its destination. In addition to the crew, 48 paratroopers were on board . Five minutes after take-off and at an altitude of 1,600 meters , engine No. 1 (far left) caught fire , which spread to the left wing . The pilots attempted an emergency landing , but the fire damaged the left wing so badly that engine number 1 came loose first and the aircraft finally became uncontrollable. 11 minutes after take-off, it crashed into the Caspian Sea 1.5 km from the coast. All 57 occupants died in what was the most serious air accident to date in what is now Azerbaijan.

root cause

The cause of the engine fire was the failure of the intermediate shaft bearing, which caused the low pressure shaft to rub against the oil lines in the engine. This heats up the low pressure wave until it finally broke. Parts of the broken low-pressure wave penetrated the fuel tank and thus caused the fire, whereupon the aircraft became uncontrollable a short time later.
