Tai Po ( Chinese 大埔 區 / 大埔 区 , Pinyin Dàbù Qū , Jyutping Daai 6 bou 3 Keoi 1 - "Tai Po district") is one of the 18 districts of Hong Kong . It is located in the east of the New Territories and with about 14,800 hectares (148 km²) is the second largest district in Hong Kong - after Islands District . In terms of population, it ranks second to last among the districts with just over 300,000 inhabitants. For a long time, Tai Po was a rural and traditional area. Similar to Yuen Long , the eponymous settlement Tai Po was traditionally a "city with a market" ( 市鎮 / 市镇 - "market town") for the villagers and agricultural producers in the area. It was not until the last decades of the 20th century that partial urbanization began with the construction of planned cities , so-called “ New Towns ”, by the Hong Kong government. The majority of the population of the Tai Po district now live in the typical high-rise housing estates of Hong Kong in the new downtown area of Tai Po, the Tai Po New Town ( 大埔 新市鎮 / 大埔 新市镇 ). The rest of the population lives in the 133 traditional villages in the area, some of which are historically very old and are inhabited by the local indigenous people ( 原 居民 ) of Hong Kong.
Origin of name
The name Tai Po 大埔 , Dàbù , Jyutping Daai 6 bou 3 is derived from the original name 大步 , Dàbù , Jyutping Daai 6 bou 6 - "Big Step", which is said to have originated because visitors came to the dense forests surrounding the place traversed with a quick step.
geography
The Tai Po district consists of two unrelated parts: the Tai Po region in the narrower sense and the northern part of the Sai Kung peninsula . Both parts are separated from each other by the Sha Tin district and an arm of the sea , the Tolo Channel ( 吐露 海峽 / 吐露 海峡 , English Tolo Channel , also Chek Mun Hoi Hap 赤 門 海峽 / 赤 门 海峡 ). At the end of this inlet is the Tolo Harbor ( 吐露港 - "Tolo Harbor"). The two regions were historically closely related. Fishermen and farmers from northern Sai Kung traditionally brought their produce to the Tai Po market.
The urban center of the district is dominated by high-rise buildings "Town of Tai Po" ( Tai Po New Town ) at the mouth of the "Lam Tsuen River" ( 林村河 , English Lam Tsuen River ). To the east of the “New Town” there is the “Tai Po Industrial Park” ( 大埔 工業 園 / 大埔 工业 园 , English Tai Po Industrial Estate ). But there are also many small village settlements with a rural character.
In the eastern section there is the Plover Cove Reservoir (' Regenpfeiferbucht -Stausee', 船 灣 淡水湖 / 船 湾 „ -" literally Ship Bay Reservoir "), a freshwater reservoir that was created by closing off an inlet with a dam. The dam is m³ with 24 hectares and 230 million storage volume, the largest surface and volume second largest freshwater reservoir in Hong Kong. It is located in the middle of the "Plover Cove Landscape Park" ( English Plover Cove Country Park , 船 灣 郊野 公園 / 船 湾 郊野 公园 - literally " Ship Bay Nature Park").
