Yuen Long ( Chinese 元朗 區 / 元朗 区 , Pinyin Yuánlǎng Qū , Jyutping Jyun 4 long 5 Keoi 1 , outdated Transcript. Un Long ) is a district in the New Territories of Hong Kong . About 614,178 inhabitants live on an area of 138.56 km².
The first settlements in what is now the city area emerged during the Song Dynasty (960–1279).
Football enthusiasts in the region have had their own football team, Yuen Long FC, since 1959 .
geography
Yuen Long lies on a large alluvial land in the northwest of the New Territories and is surrounded on three sides by hills. The district includes Ping Shan Heung ( 屏 山鄉 / 屏 山乡 ), Ha Tsuen Heung ( 廈村 鄉 / 厦村 乡 ), Kam Tin Heung ( 錦田 鄉 / 锦田 乡 ), Pat Heung ( 八 鄉 / 八 乡 ), San Tin Heung ( 新 田鄉 / 新 田乡 ), Shap Pat Heung ( 十八 鄉 / 十八 乡 ), Yuen Long Town ( 元朗 市 ) and Tin Shui Wai ( 天水圍 / 天水围 ) with a total area of around 144, 30 km².
