Sha Tin District ( Chinese  沙田 區  /  沙田 区 , Pinyin Shātián Qū , Jyutping Saa 1 tin 4 Keoi 1 ) is a district of Hong Kong and is located in the New Territories north of Kowloon. Sha Tin is home to the satellite cities of Sha Tin New Town and Ma On Shan New Town , which were built on the Shing Mun River from the 1970s .

The area of ​​the district is 69.27 km². The population is 630,000, of which 295,000 are men and 335,000 are women, which is 8.9% of the total population of Hong Kong. Sha Tin is the most populous district in Hong Kong, with almost all residents living in one of the two New Towns. The satellite cities are designed for up to 735,000 inhabitants on a city area of ​​35.91 km².

The Sha Tin District is home to the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong's second racecourse , Sha Tin Racecourse , next to the older racetrack at Happy Valley on Hong Kong Island .

Several highways traverse or end in Sha Tin: Route 1 , Route 2 , Route 8, and Route 9 . The East Rail Line of the Mass Transit Railway stops at several stations. At Tai Wai Station , you can change from the East Rail Line to the Ma On Shan Line , which runs from Sha Tin to Ma On Shan.
