history

On April 16, 1912, the IGS building was inaugurated as the municipal lyceum . The first headmaster was Otto Unrein, husband of the later namesake Grete Unrein . In 1933 the lyceum was converted into a girls' school with a domestic and linguistic background. In 1941 the name was changed to " Ernst-Moritz-Arndt School". In 1942 a high school part for boys moved in. On March 28, 1945 the school was converted into a hospital for the wounded of the Second World War and finally opened again for teaching on October 1.

In 1948 a primary and secondary school section (grades 1 to 8) and a high school section (grades 9 to 12) were established. In September of the same year the school was finally given the name Grete Unreins by resolution of the city council. In 1952 the high school part of the extended high school (EOS) "Grete Unrein" Jena was established, in 1964 the school was converted into the polytechnic high school (POS) "Grete Unrein" Jena.

After reunification , the integrated comprehensive school “Grete Unrein” was built on July 1, 1991 with an upper level for grades 5 to 13. The current headmaster is Rüdiger Schütz. The school is also the seat of the GEW Jena / Saale-Holzland district association.
