Stéphane Julien (born April 7, 1974 in Shawinigan , Québec ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who has played for the Nürnberg Ice Tigers , Kölner Haie and the EHC Munich in the German Ice Hockey League during his active career .
Career
Stéphane Julien, who started playing ice hockey at an early age, started his career with the Draveurs de Trois-Rivières in the Ligue de hockey junior majeur du Québec , one of the top junior leagues in Canada. After two years at Trois, the defender played three more years in the LHJMQ for the Sherbrooke Faucons . Although Julien had good scoring values and good plus / minus balances, the right-shooter was not drafted by any team from the National Hockey League . In 1995 the Canadian decided to move to the French first division club CSG Strasbourg , for which he was on the ice for a season before returning to North America. In the East Coast Hockey League Stéphane Julien was active in the 1996/97 season for the Pensacola Ice Pilots , but returned after the season to Europe, where he joined the Italian first division club AS Varese . This year, as in his next station, SHC Fassa , the Canadian collected more points when he played games.
In the 1999/2000 season Julien moved to the 2nd Bundesliga for ERC Ingolstadt , with whom he was defeated in the finals of the play-offs of the Düsseldorfer EG and thus missed promotion. This season was followed by three years in the Swiss National League B , where the defender went on hold for a year for HC Sierre and then for EHC Basel . In the NLB, the Canadian has always been one of the defenders with the highest points, which is why the Nürnberg Ice Tigers noticed him in 2003 and brought him into the DEL . Although Julien failed with the Ice Tigers in the 2003/04 play-off quarter-finals, the Canadian immediately established himself as one of the top defenders in the league. For the 2004/05 season , the defensive player signed a contract with league rivals Kölner Haie , where he also convinced and received a contract until 2008. In the 2005/06 season , the Canadian was the player with the best plus / minus statistics in the league after the preliminary round and the best defender with 52 points . Also one season later, Julien was one of the most points Defenders of DEL and became the DEL All-Star Game invited of 2007. At the end of January 2009 he was released from his current contract with the Haie until the end of the season. He then joined the EC Red Bull Salzburg , but returned to Cologne for the new season.
In the summer of 2010, Julien moved to the DEL promoted EHC Munich . On May 21, 2012, he announced the end of his career as a hockey player. For the 2012/13 season he was hired as an assistant coach by the newly founded Sherbrooke Phoenix from the Québec Major Junior Hockey League.
Julien was known for his precise and hard slap shot from the blue line. After each training session, the right-back, according to his own statements, completed around 100 slap shots at the empty goal in order to maintain his precision and his shot strength.
