The Kuwaiti Division One ( Arabic دوري الدرجة الأولى الكويتي, DMG Daurī ad-daraǧa al-ūlā l-kuwaitī ) is the second highest Kuwaiti soccer league.

mode

The number of clubs playing in the league varies almost every season. Depending on how many teams there are in the first division, the rest of the teams go into this second division. The champions of the league and the runner-up always play in a relegation against the last two in the first division for promotion to the first division.

Number of participants

Since the first division was expanded to 14 participants for the season, there was no longer any need for a second division until 1985. After the 1984/85 season of the first division, 7 clubs were determined by staging a play-off phase, which should then form the participants of the re-introduced second division for the 1985/86 season. This number of participants should remain relatively stable, with small changes up or down. The second Gulf War put the game on hold until 1992. In order to again determine participants for the league, the 1991/92 season of the first division was held in two groups. From these groups 6 new clubs were then determined which should then represent the participants of the new lower house.

In the 1994/95 season a complete league with all clubs was formed again. That's why there was no division one this season. In the following, after the 13th matchday, all clubs from 7th place were transferred back to Division One. These then played a master among themselves. From 1996 to 1999 there was no second division again. In the 1999/2000 season the first league was once again divided in the middle after the games played and two clubs were determined via a play-off round for all clubs from 7th place onwards that were allowed to remain in the league. The rest then went down to the First Division . From 2003 to 2006 no second division was played because all 14 clubs took part in the first division. After the 2005/06 season, all Premier League clubs from 9th place automatically went down to Division One. At the end of the 2012/13 season of the first division, there was no relegation to Division One, as all 14 clubs should play in the Premier League again from next season. After the 2016/17 season, all of the 15 clubs were relegated back to Division One from 9th place onwards. After 7 clubs in the second division in the 2017/18 season, the league now has a total of 5 participating clubs since the 2018/19 season.
