Gen Shōji ( Japanese 昌 子 源 , Shōji Gen ; born December 11, 1992 in Kobe , Hyōgo Prefecture ) is a Japanese football player .

Career

Shōji began playing football during elementary school with the Fresca Kobe U-12 club, then during middle school for Gamba Osaka Junior Youth and finally for the team at his high school Yonago North. In 2011 he was signed by the first division club Kashima Antlers and had his debut game on March 24, 2012 against Sanfrecce Hiroshima . In addition to smaller competitions, at the end of the 2016 season he was able to celebrate the double of championship and cup and in 2018 the victory of the AFC Champions League .

After a total of eight years at the club, Shoji moved to the French first division club FC Toulouse on January 4, 2019 for a transfer fee of 3 million euros and a contract until 2022 .

After a year he returned to Japan. Here he signed a contract with the first division club Gamba Osaka .

National team

On March 30, 2015 Shōji made his debut for the Japanese national soccer team in a friendly against Uzbekistan (5-1). He took part in the 2017 East Asian Cup, where he scored his only goal to date in the group game against China (2-1). At the 2018 World Cup , it was used in three of four tournament games.
